Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy offers a wealth of benefits for individuals undergoing rehabilitation, both pre and post-surgery, as well as those managing neurological conditions and more. Our hydrotherapy sessions are run in Marylebone & West London, Ealing and Croydon.

WHAT IS HYDROTHERAPY?

The unique properties of water, such as buoyancy, resistance, and warmth, create an ideal environment for therapeutic exercise and recovery. Buoyancy reduces the effects of gravity, allowing for greater freedom of movement and decreased joint stress, making it particularly beneficial for pre- and post-surgery management. Additionally, the resistance of water enhances muscle strength and endurance without the risk of injury.

How does it work?

Hydrotherapy is typically conducted in warmer water, around 32-34°C, which is significantly warmer than standard swimming pools (usually 26-28°C). This warmth helps relax muscles, improve circulation, and reduce pain, making it more effective for rehabilitation.

Buoyancy

Water’s natural buoyancy reduces the effects of gravity, making it easier to move and exercise. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with joint pain, arthritis, partial weight bearing status or limited mobility.

Hydrostatic pressure

The pressure exerted by water on the body helps reduce swelling and inflammation, which can contribute to pain relief and improved circulation.

Resistance

The viscosity of water provides resistance to movement, which can be used to strengthen muscles and improve cardiovascular fitness. This resistance can be adjusted by varying the speed and intensity of movements.

WHAT HAPPENS

During A session

A physiotherapist guides patients through specific exercises and movements designed to address their individual needs and goals. These exercises can include stretching, strengthening, balance training, and cardiovascular conditioning. Hydrotherapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Joint injuries
  • Neurological disorders
  • Chronic pain
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

The specific benefits of hydrotherapy depend on the individual’s condition and treatment plan. However, many people experience reduced pain, improved strength and flexibility, and enhanced overall function after participating in hydrotherapy.
