CASE STUDY
Jake’s rehabilitation journey
Backstory
Jake, a 20-year-old, faced a life-changing challenge when a tumor on his spine required surgical removal. Following the surgery, he suffered a C5 incomplete spinal cord injury, resulting in left-sided weakness that was more pronounced in his arms than in his legs. He also experienced spasticity, reduced sensation, and impaired proprioception, all of which affected his balance while walking.
Determined to regain his independence, Jake engaged in a tailored rehabilitation plan that included intensive physiotherapy and occupational therapy. His exercise program featured high-repetition strength training, range of motion exercises, and functional activities such as object manipulation and food chopping to enhance his dexterity and coordination. Functional electrical stimulation was also incorporated to support his recovery.
Jake’s hard work paid off; he successfully returned to playing rugby, resumed his gym routine, and started attending university. His journey underscores the importance of perseverance and the transformative impact of rehabilitation. Jake’s story serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges, proving that with the right support and determination, recovery is not just possible—it’s achievable.
“Since starting therapy after being discharged from the hospital, I have seen a lot of progress. Without the help of Becky (OT) and Karol (PT), I don’t think I would be where I am today.
Every session, they found a way to progress my exercises and challenge me in a way that felt achievable. They were also very flexible with session times, which made fitting the sessions into my routine much easier.”
