CASE STUDY
George’s rehabilitation journey
Backstory
George suffered a stroke in May 2019, and after many months of acute care and rehab in hospital, he began community physiotherapy in August. He initially presented with left-sided weakness and sensation changes in both upper and lower limbs, increased tone, reduced balance, and a subluxed shoulder. He wore a rigid orthotic for support and relied on a stick to mobilise short distances indoors, needing supervision outside.
George’s goals
These included standing up from a low sofa, engaging in his previously enjoyed gym exercises, and using his left hand and arm functionally.
The Journey
Over the years, George has surpassed these goals. He no longer uses an orthotic, walks independently indoors, tackles any set of stairs, uses a Nordic walking pole outside, and even catches the train by himself. He actively works on his upper limb, integrating it into all his workouts, zipping up coats, and playing the piano with a splint.
He trains regularly with his personal trainer, participating in sessions that include reformer Pilates and a variety of gym equipment. Collaborating with his PT and physiotherapist, they have developed challenging exercises tailored to his progress.
Looking forward
With his incredible drive and motivation, George continues to raise the bar, setting new and meaningful goals, including skiing (achieved) and working towards doing a pull-up (ongoing). At Rehab Physio London, we love supporting George, finding exciting and functional ways to challenge him as he pushes for more and embraces life to the fullest.
